I WISH I
COULD
This summer as I was walking on a
beach that has passed into memory, I caught myself dreaming. I was daydreaming a wish, that somehow I
could find a genie to liberate from a bottle; like in the mythical land of Ali
Baba
What would I wish for? Thought
I.
I would wish… all armies to
disappear and a new world in peace, to be wrought.
I would wish… that no
peoples ever again come to know of poverty or fear.
I would wish… that henceforth drugs
only be used to heal the sick.
I would wish… people learnt to get
along with each other, while observing the respect and basic dignity we all
deserve.
I would wish… that the color of
one’s skin not be of importance ever more, as a reason to be forgotten or
ignored.
I would wish...
Could I wish for more?
Yes, one more wish I dreamt; that
all future Presidents and leaders of governments be in harmony with the Socratic
concept of the Philosopher-King.
Yes, but I would expect more you
see; that they emulate Gandhi by constructing a world of peace, and inspire
in us as much hope as Martin Luther King Jr.once did.
If only dreams could come true…
and be as easy as
wishing.
I wish I could.
